Sammi Smith (1943~2005)

 

 

1943 년 미국 California의 Orange County에서 태어난

컨트리 송 가수이자 작곡가이다. 본명은 'Jewel Faye Smith'

그녀는 1960년대 초 남,서부 클럽 등지에서 음악 생활을

시작, 1967년 오클라호마에서 자니 캐시와 그의 밴드를

만나, 베이스 주자인 마아샬 그랜트에 오디션테이프를

들려주면서 인연을 맺게 되었는데, 그 후 캐시와 그랜트의 도움으로 그녀는

네쉬빌로 공연을 가서

콜롬비아 레코드사와 계약을 맺게 된다.

계약 후 비록 큰 성공을 하지는 못했지만 그때 같은 회사에서 임시직을 맡고 있던

Kris Kristofferson을 만나게 된다.

나중에 그녀가 Mega사와 계약을 맺었을 때 Kris Kristofferson은 자신이 작사, 작곡해

1970년 그의 데뷔앨범에 수록된 곡인 'Help me make it Throught the night'노래를

선물하게 된다.

곧 이어 Sammi Smith는 이 곡을 리메이크해, 이 곡은 '빌보드 Top 10'(컨트리송 차트 1위,

미국 차트 8위)까지 올려놓게 되고, 이 곡은 1971년 Kris Kristofferson에게

그래미에서 '베스트 컨트리송'의 영예를 안겨주었고, Sammi Smith에게는 '베스트 여성보컬 상'을

안겨주었다. 이로서 Sammi Smith는 그의 이름이 널리 알려지게 되는 계기가 된다.
(그 후 엘비스 프레슬리 등의 많은 가수들이 이 곡을 리메이했고, 이 곡은 수 백만 장이

판매되는 성과를 이룬다)
