텍사스 출신의 멕시코계 미국인 가수 프레디 펜더가 영어와 스페인어를 섞어서 부른
<그 다음 눈물방울이 떨어지기 전에>(Before the next teardrop falls)에서도 눈물은 슬픔이다.
이 노래의 화자는 제가 사랑하는 여자의 행복을 위해 그녀를 다른 남자에게 양보한다.

그러나 혹시라도 그 남자가 그녀의 마음을 상하게 해 그녀의 눈물방울이 떨어지기 시작하면,
그 다음 방울이 떨어지기 전에 그녀 옆으로 달려가겠노라고 한다.
비록 그녀의 처음 사랑을 얻진 못했지만, 아쉬울 때 부르면 즉시 달려가,
눈물을 말끔히 닦아주고, 그 빌어먹을 놈 자리를 차지하겠다는 것이다. 참 애절한 사랑이다.

사실 사랑이 낳은 눈물이든, 삶의 고단함이 낳은 눈물이든,
그 눈물은 저 자신을 위해 흘리는 눈물인 경우가 많다.
그러나 세상에서 추한 것 하나가 바로 자신을 위해 흘리는 눈물이다.
자기연민의 눈물, (엄살스러운) 설움의 눈물 말이다....^^... (고종석)
