Merle Haggard 그는 1937년 4월6일에 미국 Bakersfield Califonia 에서 태어나 지금까지 활동하고 있는 전설적인 컨트리 뮤직 가수입니다.
잘 아시겠지만 그의 인생은 그야말로 드라마같은 스토리가 너무너무 많은 가수이죠. 가난했던 청년시절에 감옥생활도 하였고, 일설에는 ' 쟈니 캐쉬 ' 의 노래에 영향을 받아
가수의 꿈을 키웠다고 합니다. 또한, 무명 연주인으로, 무명가수로 많은 고생끝에 성공한 아티스트 이기 때문에 가타 연주의 실력도 인정을 받았던 가수 입니다.
제가 알기에는 그의 음악에 지대한 영향을 끼치고, 또한 그가 존경했던 Buck Owens 의
부인 < 이름이 갑자기 기억이 않남 > 과 염문이 생긴 후에 결국 결혼해서 살았던 것으로 알고 있습니다.
그는 기타및 바이올린 연주를 잘할뿐아니라 singer song wrighter 로 600 여 곡을 발표했던 곡중에서 250 여 곡을 자작곡을 했다고 합니다. Okie from Muskogee는 1969년에 발표해 미국 뿐만 아니라 우리나라를 비롯해 전세계적으로

그의 밴드인 'The Strangers' 가 Muskogee라는 지방을 지나다가 순박하고
평온한 마을의 모습에 밴드멤버중 한 명이 이고장의 사람들은 마리화나도
피울줄 모르고 'LSD' 도 모를것이라는 말에 힌트를 얻어 멀 해거드와 밴드의
드러머인 Roy Burris 가 즉석에서 약 20분만에 만들어낸 곡이라고 합니다.
