1938년  Canada Ontario 출신 Gordon Lightfoot

50년대 중반 Hollywood 진출

1960년 Pete Seeger와 Bob Gibson  영향으로

자작곡한 데모 테입을 만들었고 캐나다로 돌아와

Toronto의 Yorktown 에 있는 커피 하우스 에서 작곡을 시작한다.

60년대 중반 Peter, Paul & Mary 의

"For Lovin' Me" 와 Early Morning Rain"이 인기를 끌었고

 Marty Robbins 의"Ribbon Of Darkness" 가 컨트리 챠트 정상을 차지 하는 등

작곡가로 인정 받았다.

Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley,Jerry Lee Lewis 또한 그가 쓴 곡을 노래했다.

1966년 그는 가수로 데뷔 하여

70년대에 이르어 싱어 송 라이터로 인정받게 된다.

1974년에는 Sundown으로 No.1을 차지하여 인기가 절정에 오른다.

그는전형적 으로 흘러가는 멜로디와 시적인 가사가 주로 그의 특징이며

비록 시간의 흐름에 구애 받지 않는 스타일의 포크 음악을 추구하였지만

1970년대 중반 이후에는 인기의 하락을 겪게 되고

작곡과 음반 취입도 이전 보다는 많이 줄어든다.
때때로 상업적인 음악들 에도 손을 대지만 성공을 거두지는 못하고
