소위 뉴 트래디셔널 컨트리 뮤직의 음악방향은 컨트리의 고전적인 분위기를 살려주면서 현대적인감각을 가미시킨 그런 형태였는데 릭키 스캑스는 바로 에밀루해리스의 음악에서 그모든것을 터득할수 있었고 그래서 릭키는 뉴 트래디셔널컨트리뮤직의 선두 주자로 나설수 있었던 것이었다.
릭키스캑스가 에밀루 해리스의 밴드에서 머무는동안 얻은 또하나의 행운은 아내 샤론 화이트 를 만나게 된것이다.
당시 에밀루해리스는 대부분 순회공연에서 그룹화이츠를 오프닝 밴드로 데리고 다녔는데 경력 만도 십년이상 이넘는 이그룹은 피아노와 도브로 기타를 연주 하는 아버지 버크 화이트와 두딸 샤론,쉐릴이 함께 하는 친부녀 트리오 였다.
릭키는 그중 리드보컬을 담당하고 있는 샤론과 사랑에 빠져 결혼하게 됬고이때부터 릭키도 솔로로 활약 할것을 결심하게 된다.
물론 릭키의 목소리나 가창력이 뛰어나지는 않다.그러나 새로운 고전 분위기의 컨트리송을 기대하던 많은 대중들에게 그가 내놓은 솔로앨범은 물을 만난 물고기였다.
1980년대 이후 릭키 스캑스의 인기는 그 어떤 컨트리가수의 출현과도 비교할수가 없는 대단한 것이었다.
