To the town of Agua Fria rode a stranger one fine day
Hardly spoke to folks around him didn't have too much to say
No one dared to ask his business no one dared to make a slip

He's about the worst bucker I've seen on the range
He'll turn on a Nickel and give you some change
He hits on all fours and goes up on high
Leaves me a spinnin' up there in the sky
I turns over twice and I comes back to earth
I lights in a cussin' the day of his birth

면도 하나 얻었다. 애리조나주 글렌데일의 먼지투성이 마을 에서 살면서
형과 함께 말 조련사로 일하다가 틈난나면 진 오트리의 최신영화를 보러다녔다.
가이 미첼의 리메이크 버전과 동시에 1위에 올라간 'Singing The Blues'를 포함하여 1950년대 에
대중적 취향의 노래 몇곡을 히트시킨후 자신이 물려받은 서부의 전통에 바탕을 둔 이앨범은
낡은 틀을 부수고 새로운 유행을 주도 했다.
제대로 평가 받지 못했지만 뛰어난 실력을 지닌 밴드와 함께
단 하루만에 녹음한 'Gunfighter Ballads And Trail Songs'는 옛서부에 표하는 경의다.
'Billy The Kid'와 'The Strawberry Roan'등 몇 곡은 구전가요 지만 이앨범을
특별하게 만드는것은 마티로빈스가 직접 작곡하여
특유의 부드럽고 낮게 중얼거리는 창법으로 부른 곡 들이다.
'Big Iron'은 어린시절 텍사스 기마경찰대원이던 할아버지에게 들은 이야기를 마치 서부영화의 영웅담처럼 들려주고
이와 비슷한 주제를 담은 'El Paso'에서는 신비로운 멕시코 아가시에 대한 사랑과 질투 때문에 낮선
남자를 잔인하게 살해한 이야기를 일인칭 서사로 풀어 낸다.
'El Paso'는 그의 첯번째 그래미 수상작품이 되었고 이후에 나온 수많은 컨트리컨셉트 앨범에 기틀을 베공 했다.
로빈스의 성공은 가수는 물론이고 배우와 TV쇼 진행자 작가'The Small Man'이라는 소설을 썼다.
그리고 카레이서 로까지 이어졌다.
