그녀의 음악은 컨트리이고 블루그래스(Bluegrass)이다.
5살때부터 바이올린을 배우며 클래시컬 수업을 받아오다가
8살때 컨츄리음악에 매력을 느껴 10살때 자신의 밴드를 조직하였다.
12살 때는 Illinois State Fiddle Championship에서 우승하는 등
컨트리 음악계의 신동으로 불리던 인물이다.
85년에 데뷔앨범 [Different Strokes]를 발표하여 주목을 받으며
침체기를 겪던 블루그래스 씬을 이끌 주자로 떠오르게 되었다.
90년대부터 Alison Krauss는 백밴드 Union Station과 함께 활동하며
정통 블루스그래스의 올디한 사운드를 뛰어넘어
그녀만의 세련된 블루그래스를 들려주었다.
1995년 발표한 베스트 앨범 [Now That I've Found You A Collection]은
더블 플래티넘을 기록할 정도로 큰 인기를 얻기도 하였다.
