밥 딜런(Bob Dylan)의 정신적인 스승이자 위대한 포크 음악을
대중적으로 확산시키는데 결정적인 역할을 한
포크의 전설 우디 거스리(Woody Guthrie)의 장남으로 태어난 알로 거스리(Arlo Guthrie)..
어렸을 때부터 자연스럽게 포크 음악을 접하면서 성장할 수 있는 기회를 가졌다.
"나는 손에 기타를 들고 태어났다"는 알로의 이 말은 거의 진실이다.
위대한 뮤지션이었던 아버지 뿐만이 아니라 피트 시거(Pete Seeger),
리드벨리(Leadbelly) 같은 훌륭한 뮤지션들이 그의 집에 자주 왕래하면서
알로에게 자신들의 지식을 전수해 주곤 했다.
아버지가 돌아가신 해인 1967년에 알로는 앨범 [Alice's Restaurant]를 발표하였다.
18분이 넘는 타이틀곡 'Alice's Restaurant'는 그의 위상을 확고하게 해준 명곡이었다.
1969년에는 "우드스탁(Woodstock)" 공연에서 'Coming to Los Angeles'를 불러 또 하나의 곡을 히트시켰다.
이후 70년대를 통해서 여러 장의 앨범을 발표하지만 상업적으로는 성공하지 못했다.
워너 브라더스(Warner Bros.)와의 계약 종료 후 그는 1981년 자신의 레이블인
라이징 선 레코드(Rising Son Records)사를 설립하고
신곡과 더불어 이전에 발매했던 곡들을 모아 앨범을 냈다.
1988년에는 밥 딜런, 브루스 스프링스틴(Bruce Springsteen),
유투(U2) 등 거물급 뮤지션들이 참여한 우디 거스리와 리드벨리의 헌정 앨범
[Folkways]에서 아버지의 곡인 'East Texas Red'를 불러 잔잔한 감동을 전해주기도 하였다.
"나의 부모님은 다른 사람들에게 봉사하라고 가르치셨다.
넌 무엇인가를 해야만 한다고 아버지와 어머니는 말씀하셨다.
우리 형제들은 그렇게 자랐다. 나의 아이들도 그렇게 배워가고 있다.
다른 이들에게 반드시 돌려주어야만 한다는 것을,
특히 자신에게 너무나 좋은 일들이 많이 일어났다면 말이다."
알로의 이 말은 그가 이후에 열렬한 환경론자로서 목소리를 높인 것과
여러 자선 사업에 적극적으로 참여한 것 등을 설명해 줄 수 있을 것이다.
