컨트리 음악사상 뛰어난 재능을 지닌 몇 안되는 가수들 중에 한사람인 멀해가드
그의 음악활동 기간동안 세계적인 존경과 열광을 한몸에 받은 사람이다.
그는 1937년 베이커스필드에서 태어났으며 오클라호마에서 바이올린 연주자였던
아버지로부터 음악적재능을 물려받고 또 많은 지도를 받았다.
9세때 아버지를 여의고 난뒤부터 그는 스스로 인생을 개척해 나가야 했으며
대부분의 시간을 베이커스필드의 여러 살롱에서 음악을 감상하는것으로 보냈다.
10대에 강도 혐의로 재판을 받아 1957년11월부터 거의 3년동안 샌 퀜틴
주립 교도소에서 금고형으로 복역하였다.
교도소에 있는동안 그는 컨트리가수인 자니캐쉬에 심취하여
그의 음악으로부터많은 영향을 받았다.
석방된 후인 1960년 에 멀해가드는 베이커스필드 음악클럽에서 리드기타를 연주 하였고
1962년 윈 스튜어트의 기타 반주자로 명성을 얻고자 라스베가스로 진출 하였다.
1963년 에 해가드는 톨리레이블과 계약을 맺고 첫음반을 냇으나
200장밖에 팔리지 않았다.그러나 그후 싱글 레코드인 'Sing Me A Sad Song'
과 'Strangers'는 판매량이 급증하여 캐피틀 레코드사의 제작자인
켄 넬슨의 지대한 관심을 얻기 시작 했다.
캐피틀 레코드사와 계약을 한 해가드는 스트레인저스라는
자신의 밴드를 결성하여 'Swinging Doors''Sing Me Back Home''Mama Tried'등
포함한 일련의 컨트리송을 힛트시켰다.
그러나 그의 획기적인 성장의 계기가 된것은 1969년에 물의를 일으킨 레코드
'Okie From Muskogee'였다.
