Carlene Carter (칼렌 카터)는 June Carter (어머니)의 딸로 태어났는데 2살때에 부모가 이혼을 하였고, 자신이 12살 되던 해에 그녀의 어머니가 Johnny Cash와 재혼을 하여, 이복 자매인 Rosanne Cash 와 함께 Carter/Cash 순회 쇼에서 백업 싱어를 하는등 음악에 재능은 많았습니다. 그녀 자신은 15살때에 일찍 결혼하였으나, 수년 못가서 이혼을 하고, 또다시 19살에 재혼을 하고, 그이후 여러차례 결혼과재혼을 거듭하는 등, 결혼과 가정적인 면에서는 파란많은 인생을 살아왔습니다.   1978년(23세때) 직업적인 가수가 되기 위하여 Los Angeles 로 가서 Warner Brothers 와 레코드 계약을 맺고 앨범을 내기 시작 했는데, 1980년대 초반까지는 영국에 건너가서 사는 동안, 미국 칸트리 계로 부터는 격리되어 있었습니다.   1980뎐대 중반에 미국으로 다시 돌아와서 Carte Family 순회공연에 가담하여 노래를 불러 왔고, 1989년에 다시 레코딩 가수로 복귀하여, 종전의 rock 음악 스타일로 부터 본격적인 칸트리 스타일의 노래로써, 1995년경까지는 꽤 많은 힛트곡을 내었습니다.
