이후의 작품은 시골냄새가 너무 많이 풀풀 풍기는 것 같아서 문화가 다른
우리들이 쉽게 친해지기는 힘든거 같은 느낌이다.
전세계의 민요연구와 수집을 위하여 1938년 하버드대 중퇴하고
1948년에는 포크그룹 ‘위버스’를 결성 현대 민요를 융성시켰고
할아버지가 되어서도 벤죠를 연주하며 정열적으로 노래함에 부럽기도 하네요.
30년대 말 우디 거스리와 함께 노조설립을 증진시키고 파시즘을 비난하는
다른 포크음악가들과 함께 정치적인 그룹
알마낙 싱어스(Almanac Singers)를 조직하기도 했다.
1970~80년대 환경보호에 앞장섰던 피트는
1969년에 허드슨 강의 환경개선을 위해 클리어워터 범선을 띄우는데
관심을 표명하기도 했고 야외콘서트, 페스티벌 순회공연 등의 바쁜 일정 속에서도
노동조합에서부터 반공해 법률제정까지 다양한 사건들의 주최가 되는
사회활동을 끊임없이 이어갔다.
1990년 케네디 센터로부터 최고의 국가적 예술인에게 수여하는 명예 상을
수여한 것을 비롯해 '로큰롤 명예의 전당'에 입적,
'Harvard Arts Medal' 획득하는 등 다방면에서 그의 공로를 인증 받았다.
1996년에는 그래미 시상식에서 '최고의 트레디셔널 포크 앨범'상을 수상했을 뿐 아니라,
1999년에는 쿠바를 여행하던 중
'Felix Varela Medal'(환경보호와 반인종주의에 입각한 인도주의적
예술 활동에 대한 공로를 치하하는 쿠바 최고의 영예)을 수여했다.
음악인으로서 그는 그야말로 진솔, 정직, 온후, 순수했으며
지구촌 모든 이들의 아버지였던 것이다. -웹-
