성미가 사납거나 우울할 필요가 없지만 그런게 도움이되는건 분명하다.
아이라 루빈이 꼭그러했다는건 아니지만 독특한 인물이었음을 분명하다.
1940년대에 등장한 찰리와 아이라 루빈의 형제는 절묘한 화음의 형제 듀엣이라는 컨트리
전통적양식을 계승하고 델모어 브라더스의 뒤를 잇는 동시에 에벌리브라더스의 모범이 되었다.
이들의 음반중 완전한 앨범형식으로 최초발매된 'Tragic Songs of Life'
컨트리음악계에 핵심적인 음반중의 하나로 남아 있다.
찰리의 바리톤과 아이라의 깔끔한테너는 경쾌하면서도 우아하다.
그들의 노래는 가스펠이 가미된 블루그래스로 속마음을 그대로 드러내는 진솔함을 담고있다.
가장널리알려진 이음반의 커버는 괴로운 표정으로 편지를 구겨쥐고 있는 금발의 미녀의 모습에
찰리와 아이라의 모습이 겹쳐진것으로 통속소설의 표지같은 그림이다.
그그림은 재발매시 추가된것으로 사실에 낭만적인 허구성을 덧칠하게되었다.
사실아이라와 찰리에게 죄와 나약함과 비극과 유혹의 노래들은 너무나도
현실적인것이 었고 여기서 인위적이거나 키치적인 면은 찿아볼수 없다.
그들의 음악에 칼날처럼예리한 개성을 부여한 것은 역시 아이라의 자기파괴적 성향이다.
찰리는 건실 하였지만 아이라는 술과 여자를 좋아했고 곧잘 난폭해졌다.
참다못한 찰리는 1963년에 솔로로 나섰다. 아이라는 세번째아내인 페이가쏜총에맞은
일을 비롯해 많은 위기를 잘 버텨내었지만 1965년에
미주리에서 새신부와 함께 차를 타고가던 중 충돌사고로 사망했다.
후에 그램 파슨스가 이들의 음악에대한 관심을 불러일으킨후
루빈형제의 전설은 더욱 깊고 넓어졌다.-1001에서-
